Zodiac sign compatibilty and your relationships
To better understand astrology compatibility, let’s refresh the elements. There are four elements in astrology: fire, earth, air and water. Each element possesses many specific traits; here are the basics for each element and the three zodiac signs assigned to them:
- Fire represents energy, adventure, drive, passion, ambition and impulsiveness. The signs attributed with fire are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
- Earth represents restraint, seriousness, organization, practicality, stability, responsibility and loyalty. The signs attributed to earth are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
- Air represents logic, open-mindedness, curiousness, freedom and playfulness. The signs attributed to air are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.
- Water represents sensitivity, creativity, imagination, compassion, nurturing and caring. The signs attributed to water are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
The signs that have the same element will have the best compatibility. But beyond that, think about the elements in nature and how they work together naturally. Many of the elements, while not completely compatible, complement each other very well. This is similar to how astrological sign compatibility will work in individuals. Here are the elements together:
Air and fire make a great combination together. Think about it: fire needs air to survive in nature. In astrology compatibility, fire is drawn to air’s playfulness, logic and open-mindedness.
Air and earth are compatible in many ways. In nature, everything on earth needs air to grow, while in astrological sign compatibility, air and earth are compatible on a mental level, as both value logic.
Air and water mix often in nature and in zodiac signs as well. For these two signs, the sky is the limit when combining water’s imagination and air’s ideas.
Fire and earth are often found together in nature as well as in zodiac compatibility. Fire’s ambition fits nicely with earth’s organization, making it easy to work together.
Fire and water in nature make steam — the same is true with their zodiac signs. Where fire is very passionate, water has passionate desires.
Earth and water go together hand in hand, as proof, 71% of the earth is covered by water. As for their astrology compatibility, earth feels safe with water’s nurturing and caring traits, and water feels stable with earth’s stability trait.

So, what would be the signs that will not be able to go together?
All of the signs have traits
All of the signs have traits in their elements that go well with others, so in some ways all the traits can go together. But you are right - there are some traits of the elements that don't fit as well together. Take earth and fire, while they could work very well together, they can also have a hard time since fire is impulsive and earth is practical. Another example would be air and earth. While they both value logic and can get along on a mental level, air values freedom, where earth is grounded and values restraint. This is why it is important for your relationships to understand the elements and the traits associated with them. Once you realize where you do fit and where you don’t fit, you will be able to adjust to each other.
