Abundant Neem Harvest at the Farm

I spent another Saturday at Maggie's Herb Farm in St. Augustine teaching an advanced soapmaking class for Creating Shampoo Bars and Spa/Salt Soaps. The class itself when very well. I had some mild anxiety on the way up that I had maybe not packed all the ingredients that we needed, but everything was packed and it was a very smooth class. >>Read more »

A Tasty Thyme at Maggie's Herb Farm in St. Augustine: Sharing a Cough Syrup Recipe from my Weekend Class

I spent national Herb Day yesterday at Maggie's Farm in St. Augustine teaching a class on seasonal recipes for cold and flu. We had jam packed day full of herbal activities including preparation of fire cider, an herbal chest salve, Holy Basil tea, and an excellent cough syrup. I know there were some of you who wanted to go, but couldn't make it. So I'm posting a recipe from class that you can try at home.>>Read more »

How to Become a Master Herbalist in 30 Years or More

In the last few years I've come across a number of people taking or teaching "Master Herbalist" programs. It always makes me cringe to hear the phrase. It is counter intuitive to me that one can become a master by taking a year long program. To me a master herbalist is someone who has had many years of practice. One of my herbal heros is Hua Tou. Even though he was the most famous herbalist in China during his time, he disguised himself to learn from other herbalists anonymously. I now tell the students in my classes, some of whom are in Master Herbalist programs, that I am a Junior Herbalist. Hopefully after reading this article, you can understand why. >>Read more »

The Organic Garden – Natural Pest Control

The aim of organic pest control isn’t to eliminate all pests. In my mind, organic gardening is about balance, and insects play a vital part in the balance of your garden — so one shouldn’t get into Terminator mode when thinking of pesky bugs in the garden! So far I have gone into some of the things you can do to naturally encourage the balance of your garden, but sometimes further intervention is necessary if the balance is tipped!

Healthy Chickens with Herbs

Keeping Chickens Healthy with Herbs: Deworming and Parasite Prevention
Backyard chickens are becoming extremely popular. And "free-range" sounds all the more natural and healthy. Unfortunately, I have learned the hard way that free-range chickens are also more susceptible to parasites from wild bird droppings. Using herbs only, it appears I have almost won out the battle against parasites.>>Read more »

The Organic Garden - Why it Works

An organic garden is a wondrous thing – most people just think of the benefits of having fresh produce that is chemical free, but this is just the end-game of the fascinating ecosystem that is an organic garden. Let me explain …

In a garden that is fertilised and sprayed using chemicals and other poisons, there is a vicious cycle that is

Summer Solstice

It's official! The summer solstice occurred yesterday, marking the first day of Summer. Like most of you, I didn't need a calender to tell me that. Did I miss spring? Sweltering temperatures in the 90's with a heat index in the 100's have lingered here for the last week or so. We were out in the garden early yesterday morning to weed and water, and by 9:00 a.m. the heat was oppressive.

Spirit Gardening

I grew up in the garden; in fact, I tend to count the stages of my life through the gardens I have known. My mother and father were avid gardeners and we always had something growing outside no matter where we lived. If space allowed there would be corn and potatoes, pumpkins and zucchinis — once we even grew peanuts! We always had chickens who roamed free in the garden, picking off the bugs and enjoying the good life; I used to hang out with them in the sun all the time.>>Read more »

Catching up in the Garden

Eighteen days was quite a few to be away from the plants and chickens. There were 30 inches of rain here while I was gone. Luckily everything drained well and there was no flooding or severe leakage.>>Read more »

Plant a Healing Garden

The current garden project I am working on is an apothecary garden. I want to make more tinctures, oils and salves for myself and for my business , so I have plans to fill it with a number of healing herbs. Like any herb garden it will need to be planted in full sun, and drain well.

Llewellyn's 2009 Herbal Almanac

After perusing my store's New Age/Witchcraft shelves for about 20 minutes I spotted the cover of Llewellyn's 2009 Herbal Almanac tucked in behind some other books. I was immediately attracted by the cover. It was, no doubt, Llewellyn's intention to lure unsuspecting green/kitchen witches in with the lovely flora and fauna on the cover.>>Read more »
