Writing Killer Keywords on your Blogs
Many of us write our blogs about whatever subject we are passionate about, and then as an afterthought add a few keywords that seem relevant to our blog. After the first few obvious ones, we just stuff a few more somehow related words into the keywords window to make it look we have thought long and hard about it.
Strike Out! In the world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – in other words, increasing your rankings, this is a completely upside down approach and is wasting a great opportunity.
Assuming you are writing your blog to be read by as many people as possible, it is essential that you are using the best keywords possible. In techno-speak this is called “Keyword Optimization” but you don’t have to be a techno-geek to understand what it is all about.
Your keywords are like a gateway to your subject – they are what you want your blog to show up for in a search. So for example if your theme is “Organic Gardening”, you would want your blog to show up in a search for “organic gardening”, NOT for “sustainability” (which is related but a whole topic on its own) or for “compost”.
Here are a few simple tips on how to use keywords more effectively.Think about your keywords before you start writing. Google offers a great service called Google AdWords which helps you to research how often particular keywords are searched, and gives a huge range of related keywords to your subject. Why not try to find keywords that are frequently searched but not so frequently used so that you have maximum chance of being found? https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Once you have chosen your main keywords, use them in your blog title, in the title tag and in the META description if there is one. Use them in your opening sentence and then add them through your blog – but don’t overdo it! Look over the internet and you can clearly see the blogs that are written solely for SEO purposes compared to those that are written for interest. Shortly, don’t go overboard on keywords – just use as many as you need to fully represent your blog post and its subject/s.
If you have other blog posts that are related to this one, you can use your selected keywords to create backlinks to them in the text. This means for example in our Organic Gardening blog, if we are mentioning soil organisms in this post, but we previously wrote a whole blog about the little critters, we can make a blue backlink to that post using the “insert link” function.
